Chasing the mighty taimen
Fly Fishing Mongolia with Aussie Fly Fisher, chasing giant taimen on dry fly in the midst of vast steppes, rugged mountains and clear rivers is guaranteed to take your breath away.
SpeciesHucho Taimen, Lenok, Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling, Perch
Mongolia, known for its rugged expanses and nomadic people, is also a majestic storehouse for some of the world’s largest trout. Chasing giant taimen on dry fly in the midst of vast steppes, rugged mountains and clear rivers is guaranteed to take your breath away. If you want to experience explosive surface takes from large dry flies within one of the world’s most vast, remote, and naturally beautiful countries, then Mongolia is for you.
Flies that imitate large rodents or squirrels are a favourite and it is not uncommon to see a fish of 1 to 1.5 metres leave the water in pursuit of your fly. At the end of each day you’ll settle into the traditional Mongolian camp, before gathering with other anglers for hearty and gourmet meals, including, of course, the Mongolian BBQ speciality. Autumn is an especially spectacular time to visit as the green leaves quickly turn to gold on the background of a big open sky.
We hope you can join us for the adventure.
FLY FISHING MONGOLIA PROGRAM
AFF Travel, teaming up with Sweetwater Travel Company, will be hosting another unforgettable trip to Mongolia in September 2019. Sweetwater Travel are the longest serving outfitter for Taimen in Mongolia and their camps are perfectly positioned for the best river fishing for large Taimen. They have a strong focus on conservation and the Eg-Uur watershed is the only system managed for exclusive catch & release sport fishing.
Each trip consists of eight anglers. The groups are then split into pairs and rotated between four different guides and set beats. Travelling by separate jet boats, each pair of anglers has the opportunity to fish fresh water each day covering over 145 kilometres of river.
Taimen is what brings most anglers to Mongolia, however it is not the only species on offer. Lenok, Pike, Grayling, and Perch are also in abundance and provide an exciting array of options from using a 4 weight up to 9 weight rod.
