Yellow-Tail Kingfish & Backcountry Trout
North Island, New Zealand is without a doubt one of the world’s premier trout & kingfish fisheries.
Trout // Kingfish – North Island NZ March 2020
From the rugged back-country to the saltwater flats, this trip showcases some of the best fishing New Zealand has to offer. After experiencing the North Island’s premier trout fisheries, you’ll then feel the thrill of chasing kingfish on the Tauranga flats.
These trips are in collaboration with NZ Guide, Lucas Allen & Julian Danby. Lucas & Julian are both certified captains and run maritime approved inshore purpose built fly fishing boats, perfect for fishing the numerous flats of Tauranga Harbour.
With the perfect combination of back-country trout, and lively saltwater kingys, this will be a trip to remember.
The six days of fly fishing are made up of three days chasing kingfish on the flats, and three days chasing trout in the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua regions.
Tauranga Harbour is the birth-place of ray-riding Yellow-Tail Kingfish on the flats. The expansive flats offer an array of shallow-water, sight-fishing options for Kingfish & Kahawai. 10-25kg Kingfish are a realistic target in this harbour, and the channel markers also provide a fishing option during low light periods. North Island kingfishing is best approached by a flats boat to access the many areas on offer.
The local trout fishing is extensive and offers large numbers of three to eight-pound trout, with the chance of ten pound plus fish in the local spring creeks. The trout days are typically a 30 to 60-minute trip from the accommodation, while the kingfish boat ramp is only five minutes’ drive. This trip provides the flexibility to change plans and leverage the best fishing options according to the weather and fishing conditions.
