Important information: Risks associated with fishing
Aussie Fly-Fisher Guiding Services is a business concerned with teaching or guiding you, in fly fishing. Fishing is a comparatively low-risk activity, however there are a number of risks of physical injury if you go fishing on the water or in the Australian bush with AFFGS. These include:
1. Flies and hooks: Flies are sharp, built around fishhooks that can stick into you. Please take care when handling flies, ensuring you are always wearing eye protection, preferably Polaroid sunglasses. We do not provide Polaroids for health reasons and you are strongly urged to bring your own.
2. Treacherous terrain: Fly fishing often involves walking through bush or farmland as well as crossing or wading through rivers. Care should always be taken and appropriate footwear, like hiking boots or waders, should be worn with thick socks. Gumboots are not recommended. Wading is a potentially hazardous activity requiring extreme care. If at any time you are uncomfortable or unsure when wading, please tell your guide. Remember the rabbit and wombat holes and look where you are going at all times.
3. Poisonous creatures: The Australian bush is home to several species of poisonous animals including insects, snakes and spiders. Waders, good footwear, long pants and careful observation reduce the risk of a bite or sting. Common sense dictates that ALL animals encountered should be left alone.
4. Sunburn: Water reflects the sun and sunburn risk is high, even on cloudy days. Always follow cancer council guidelines and bring your own sun protection.
5. Alcohol: We encourage you to celebrate your catch after your day’s fishing and driving has ended. Alcohol is not provided, or taken, on a guided tour.
6. Medical conditions: If you suffer from any medical conditions that you feel could increase your risk while fishing, please advise your guide prior to booking.
7. Strains and sprains: Some people find the constant casting, bending and crouching causes muscular and other discomfort or injury, particularly in the legs and back. You must exercise your judgment to ensure you stop fishing [or never start] as soon as you feel you risk injury. If you do feel it necessary to stop, make sure you have the right clothes to stay warm. Please note your Guide has many years of experience in the Australian bush and in fly fishing. They are trained in first-aid but have no para-medical training.
8. Dress: Warm weatherproof clothes should always be taken and worn if necessary. A wide brimmed hat is recommended. Please note your guide will not provide clothing for you unless requested at the time of booking. Waders can usually be provided. Dull or bush coloured clothing is also recommended. We also recommend that you bring a full change of clothing in case you should accidentally fall into the water.
8. Licence: A fishing licence is mandatory to fly fish in most States and Territories. It is your responsibility to provide yourself with a licence. Most State / Territory fishing Licences can be obtained online.
If you are prepared to take responsibility for yourself and/or those under your care while undertaking this fishing tour, we can continue. Should you feel unsure about any of the items explained above, then it is best you consider another activity. Please note, we seek to reduce the risks to you, as much as possible.
